“ETENRAKU” 「越天楽」
“ETENRAKU” is one of the famous tunes of GAGAKU (ancient court music). Unique instruments are used such as Shinto flute, Thirteen-stringed Koto, Japanese lute and drums. There are GAGAKU pieces with dance and without dance, the former called BUGAKU (an ancient court dance and music) and the latter called KANGEN (the orchestral music with wind and string instruments). GAGAKU flourished in Heian Period(794～1185) and was became to be performed at temples and shrines. The Kitakyushu (Northern Kyushu) folk song “Kuroda-Bushi” is said to be based on “Etenraku”.

「越天楽」は雅楽曲の中でも最もよく知られた名曲。演奏には笙、ひちりき、楽筝、楽琵琶、楽太鼓など独特の楽器が使われます。雅楽には舞のあるものと舞を伴わないものとあり、前者を舞楽、校舎を管弦と言うそうです。宮廷音楽として平安時代に栄え、平安中期にはこの旋律で今様（当世風）で演奏することも行われた。北九州民謡の「黒田節」（筑前今様）は「平調（ひょうぢょう）越天楽」によるものだそうです。
